What should we learn from Judas?
II. In Judas, we see how far a man might go in seeming faith all the while being the devil’s child -
1. Judas had a seeming intimate relationship with Christ – John 13:18
2. Judas had a high office in the visible church of Christ – John 6:70-71
3. Judas witnessed the miracles of Christ
4. Judas heard the teachings of Christ
5. It is likely he cast out demons, healed the sick and raised the dead with Christ’s disciples – Matthew 10:1-8; Matthew 7:21-23
III. In Judas, we see the seed to budding to full flowering of the weeds of sin in the heart of an unregenerate man -
1. He had dollar signs in his eyes – John 12:6; Matthew 6:19-24
2. This is a fault for many – 2 Timothy 4:10; Matthew 19:16-23; 1 Timothy 6:8-11
3. He wasn’t born again, therefore
A. He could not see the kingdom of God – John 3:3
B. He could not relish, desire or understand the Kingdom of God – 1 Corinthians 2:1-14
C. The Ways of Christ so clearly set before Him were opposed to his sin nature and Satan’s indwelling, washing the disciples feet seems to be the last straw
(1) Christ was meek, humble and headed for the cross
(2) Judas not being “spiritually minded” despised Christ
(3) Even his remorse was not mixed with faith – Matthew 27:3-5
4. The flowering of the seed of sin is not unique to Judas -
In application:
I. We should not be surprised by treachery or any other sin in the visible church – 2 Corinthians 11:26; Colossians 3:12-14
II. We should examine ourselves, to be certain we are in the faith – 2 Corinthians 13:5
III. We should endeavor to work out our salvation with fear and trembling – Philippians 2:12-13
IV. We should be careful not to endanger our souls by playing with sin, or taking it lightly – Matthew 5:27-30
V. We should know that sooner or later every Judas will be exposed – Galatians 6:7-8; John 3:20; Revelation 20:12
