Morning Sermon Outline
“The Teaching Ministry of the Holy Spirit”
John 14:15-18 & :25-26; Isaiah 28
I. He is the Spirit of Truth and His Ministry is Truth, even Hard Truth – John 14:17
1. His teaching is in full agreement with the Word of God we have in Scripture – 1 Timothy 3:16; 2 Peter 1:19-21
2. His teaching includes hard truth about sin, hell and judgment – Isaiah 28:1-3; Revelation 14:9-11; Matthew 25:41
3. The fact that these harder truths are avoided in many ministries hurts the church and must grieve God’s Spirit – Jeremiah 6:13-14
II. As the Spirit of Truth the Holy Spirit is NOT received by the World, they do not see Him or know Him – John 14:17
1. This is because they are unregenerate, not born again – John 3:3; 3:5; 3:7
2. This means they cannot understand the cross or salvation – 1 Corinthians 1:18
3. To the natural man, the things of the Spirit, are foolishness – 1 Corinthians 2:14
4. When confronted with the Word of God the natural man will often ridicule it – Isaiah 28:9-10
III. Yet the Holy Spirit teaches us about Christ – John 14:25-26
1. He did this even through the Old Testament Prophets – 2 Peter 1:16-21; Isaiah 28:16; Psalm 118:22; Acts 4:10-12; 1 Peter 2:2-10
2. He does this even today – 1 Corinthians 2:9-10
3. With this teaching comes the anointing of heart to listen to and obey God’s word – compare Isaiah 28:9-10 to 1 Peter 2:2
4. He opens our eyes to the importance of Christ’s cross – Acts 2:36-39; 1 Corinthians 1:18
IV. The Holy Spirit is thorough in His teaching – John 14:26
1. He teaches us “all things”
2. God thoroughly furnishes His servants – 2 Timothy 3:16-17
V. Yet those who neglect the Holy Spirit’s teaching are blinded and hardened – John 12:38-41; Romans 11:8
1. The very message which brings salvation to some is a stumbling block to others – 1 Peter 2:8-9
2. Truth that should have been rest and salvation results in condemnation – Isaiah 28:11-19
Application for Today
1. Pray for the Holy Spirit’s guidance and help as you read, hear or study God’s Word!
2. Desire the Word as New Born babes desire milk, depend upon it as your necessary bread – 1 Peter 2:2; Matthew 4:4
3. Return this evening for more information on hearing and studying God’s Word with help from your teacher the Holy Spirit!
The Christian is bred by the Word, and he must be fed by it.

THOMAS MANTON
The Scripture is the library of the Holy Ghost; it is a pandect of divine knowledge, an exact model and platform of religion. The Scripture contains in it the credenda , “the things which we are to believe,” and the agenda , “the things which we are to practice.”
