“God and Global Warming”
Genesis 9:8-17

Just this week former vice-president and presidential candidate Al Gore won an Oscar for his documentary on Global Warming. Truly Hollywood movie stars believe the sky is falling and the media usually backs them with statements mentioning the “consensus of scientists” and “the debate is over” ... Yet can these dire reports be trusted?

I. The Bible says a great deal about this:
1. God promises, makes a covenant with man, not to destroy the world by a flood – Genesis 9:8-17
2. God uses the word “covenant” 7 times in this passage - a Covenant in Scripture was a bond in blood, extremely binding, God’s making this Covenant means He is going to back it up!
3. This Covenant was backed by the sign of the rainbow
4. This Covenant agreed with broader language about climate God uses in Genesis 8 (God will and does control the climate) – Genesis 8:21-22
A. God’s control over the weather (wind and waves) is taught throughout Scripture –
Genesis 6:5-7:24 God judges the world with a flood
Exodus 9:23-29 God brings hail and fire on Egypt
Leviticus 26:19-20 God threatens a drought
Deut. 11:13-15 God promises rain as a reward
Deut. 28:24 God threatens drought as a punishment
Joshua 10:11 God brings LARGE hail on the Amorites
I Samuel 7:10 God’s loud thunder confuses the Philistines
I Sam.12:16-18 God makes a point / response to Samuel
II Sam. 21:1 God causes famine due to unrepented of sin
I Kings 8:35-36 God brings rain and healing upon repentance
I Kings 17:1-7 God withholds rain, due to sin
I Kings 18:41-45 God ends drought according to Elijah’s prayer
Amos 4:6-10 God withheld rain (part of ineffective work)
Jonah 1:4; 10-15 God uses the storm to take Jonah to Nineveh
Matthew 5:45 God rains on the just and unjust
Mark 4:39-41 Christ commands the wind and waves
Revelation 16:21 God brings hail as punishment
B. “Global Warming” teachers typically present an eco-system (even a world) without God (hence much less prayer)
C. Yet, godly men and women know God controls this eco-system (world) even like a machine – Genesis 9
5. “Global Fire” according to Scripture, is NOT an environmental issue but is rather a moral / God’s judgment issue – Revelation 16:3-9
6. If we understand Scripture, we realize this ultimate judgment will be more than global, it means the end of this world – 2 Peter 3:10-13

II. Real science speaks to this issue
1. A less than one degree avg. temperatures increase .06 in the last 100-150 years is not a big deal, especially when you consider the details of how things have been measured.
2. The hockey stick theory, proven false but still promoted as true is just a lie.
3. Computer models are not accurate predictors of the future
4. High CO2 levels are overstated as a danger
5. “Consensus of Scientists” is at least partly propaganda
6. Al Gore’s Movie, etc …
7. Global Warming = Political Power Grab
8. “Global Warming” provides a “new morality” for the immoral and irreligious
9. Kyoto and the original story of “Chicken Little”

III. Conclusion
1. We live under a rainbow, under the covenant of grace, we live under the cross and grace of Christ – 2 Corinthians 6:2
2. We live in the last days, a time of URGENCY:
A. Yet, not urgency about environmental causes but urgency about the things of God: repentance, prayer, true salvation, making your calling and election sure – 2 Peter 1:10
B. Urgency and concern about global warming is a devilish distraction from the true FEARFUL FIRES that not only might come, but certainly will come and not only melt this earth but the entire universe – 2 Peter 3:10-13
