”Surveying the Glories of Christ and His Cross?”
John 13:31-32
NKJ John 13:31 So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, "Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him. 32 "If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately.
I. Christ is glorified in and by His own sufferings – :31a
1. Christ’s sufferings glorify Him by displaying the perfection of His obedience – Matthew 22:37-39
A. Christ’s willingness to suffer shows us His attitude toward God’s Law – Philippians 2:8
B. The fierceness of the sufferings He is willing to endure show us the extreme greatness of His love – John 15:12-13
2. Christ’s sufferings glorify Him because they mark Him as our Redeemer
A. Christ is our redeemer, our federal head, our representative man
B. In this He is like and unlike Adam – Romans 5:12-19
3. Christ’s sufferings glorify Him because what attends them and how He handles them show Him to be the God’s Son – Matthew 27:51-54
4. Christ’s sufferings glorify Him because they happen according to God’s prophecy
II. God the Father is glorified in and by the sufferings of Christ – :31b
1. Christ’s sufferings manifest God’s power – Isaiah 53:1
2. Christ’s sufferings manifest God’s wisdom – 1 Corinthians 1:18-25
3. Christ’s sufferings manifest God’s righteousness – Romans 3:21-26
4. Christ’s sufferings manifest God’s love – John 3:16-17; Romans 5:8
5. They glorify God by defeating Satan – Hebrews 2:14
6. They glorify God by saving us – Isaiah 53:4-5 & :11-12
III. God glorifies Christ because of His sufferings – :32
1. He exalts Him highly, He reigns over all the earth – Philippians 2:9; Acts 2:36
2. He gives Him a Name above every name – Philippians 2:9
3. At the Name of Christ, every knee must bow – Philippians 2:10-11
4. He allows Him vengeance upon His enemies, those who do not believe – Hebrews 10:12-13; Acts 2:32-40
Therefore, we should respond to Him in repentance and faith
