Sermon Outline
“The Cup of Christ”
John 18:11
I. Scripture speaks of many interesting “cups” –
There are some dreadful cups:
1. The cup of the wicked – Psalm 11:6
2. The cup of God’s fury – Isaiah 51:17 & :22; Jeremiah 25:15, 17 & 28
3. The cup of His indignation – Revelation 14:10
4. The cup of the wine of the fierceness of His wrath – Revelation 16:19
5. The cup of consolation from which the wicked are restricted – Jeremiah 16:6-7
There are cups to avoid:
1. The golden cup of Babylon – Jeremiah 51:7
2. The cup of sister Samaria – Ezekiel 23:28-35
3. The sparkling cup – Proverbs 23:31
4. The cup of shame – Habakkuk 2:15-16
5. The cup of the Pharisees – Matthew 23:25-26; Luke 11:39
6. The cup of demons – 1 Corinthians 10:21
There are also delightful cups:
1. David’s cups – Psalm 16:5; 23:5
2. The cup of salvation – Psalm 116:13
3. The cup of cold water – Matthew 10:42; Mark 9:41
There are also some interesting literal cups:
1. Pharaoh’s cup – Genesis 40:11-13; :21
2. Joseph’s cup – Genesis 44:2. :16-17
3. Uriah’s cup – 2 Samuel 12:3
II. Yet the Greatest of All Cups is the Cup of Christ – John 18:11
1. When Christ speaks of His cup He is speaking of His lot in life which He received from God the Father, He is speaking of obedience to the Father – John 18:11
2. When He speaks here, as He speaks in other places, He is speaking specifically of the cross, He is working for our salvation – 1Corinthians 1:18; 1 Corinthians 2:2
3. This was a particularly dreadful cup, one which Christ would avoid if at all possible – Matthew 26:39 & 42; Luke 22:42
4. Yet, after prayer Christ takes up this cup boldly – John 18:11; Hebrews 12:1-2
III. This Cup is on Christ’s Disciples share – Matthew 20:22-23
IV. This Cup is symbolized in the Lord’s Supper – Mark 14:23; Luke 22:17 & 20
NKJ 1 Corinthians 11:25 In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me." 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death till He comes. 27 Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. 28 But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup.
