Morning Sermon Outline
”Following Christ’s Example”
John 13:1-17

We come today to a new portion of the Gospel of John, this portion showing Jesus primarily focused upon His own, Whom He loved, His sheep!

How can we follow the example of Christ?

I. By understanding the circumstance, setting and intentions Christ had with the example He set -
It is easy to have good intentions but be wrong; it is easy to take this passage too literally – John 13:14
What factors should we consider important in this passage for our instruction?
1. The connection to the Passover – Exodus 12:1-13; 1 Corinthians 5:7: Philippians 2:5-11
2. The connection to the disciple’s argument – Luke 22:24-27
3. The connection to the action of Judas – John 13:2
4. The connection to a context emphasizing love – John 13:1; 34-35
5. The connection to Christ approaching death on the cross – John 13:1
6. The connection to Christ’s spiritually oriented conversation with Peter – John 13:5-11

II. By actually following Christ’s example in these ways –
1. By practical action, the Christian should be willing to work with his hands – John 13:14
2. By Christ-like humility and unselfishness – Philippians 2:1-11
3. By a Christ-like walking against the ways of this world – Luke 22:24-27
4. By having a Christ-like love and forgiveness for each other – Colossians 3:12-14
