“Jesus Christ: The Word Made Flesh”
John 1:1-18
This Christmas Eve let us consider our Lord Jesus Christ as “the Word made flesh”
One great thing that separates human beings from animals is our ability to communicate … Christ is God’s Ultimate Communication to lost human beings …
I. A most wondrously expressive Word – John 1:1; 1:14; 1:18
He is the express image of the invisible God – Colossians 1:15
He is the radiance of His glory and the exact representation of His glory – Hebrews 1:3
He said Himself, “he who has seen Me has seen the Father” John 14:9
He shows us in human form exactly Who and What God is
1. Because He is God – John 1:1; He is the Son OF GOD in that shares the attributes of God, emphasis is not on His being “a son” (as understood humanly) but on OF GODness!
2. Because He has been with God and understands God – John 1:1; 1:14; 1:18 – He expounds the Father
3. His life and teaching give us the fullness of the Gospel – Matthew 5:1-17; 2 Corinthians 1:20
II. A most vitally important Word – John 1:3-4; 1:9-10; 1:15-17
1. Jesus is the Creator and Sustainer of all things – John 1:3
2. This beginning of the Book of John is modeled after the beginning of Genesis: “In the beginning was the Word”; “In the beginning God created”
3. To the Hebrews the Word was the power by which God created – Hebrews 1:3
4. To the Greeks the Logos (Word) was an abstract force which brought being, order and harmony to the Universe, the Word (Logos) held all things together.
5. The Word gives LIFE (John 1:4) even eternal life – John 17:3
Is there anything in life as important as a relationship with Christ? No, nothing!
III. A most shamefully neglected Word – John 1:5; 1:10-11
1. Our Lord, the Word, in a manger did not have those qualities sinful man expected – Isaiah 53:1-3
2. Our sin-filled eyes do not naturally appreciate God’s glory – 2 Corinthians 2:14; John 15:18-23
IV. A life changing, save-your-soul-from-HELL Word – John 1:12-13; 2 Corinthians 5:17
1. Christ begins the work that makes us new creatures –
We get in Christ:
A. New Eyes – John 3:3
B. New Ears – John 10:26-27; Revelation 2:7; 2:11; 2:17; 2:29; 3:6; 3:13; 3:22 We who are born anew, hear to follow and do – James 1:22
C. A New Mouth – Before – Romans 3:13-14 after – Psalm 40:3
D. New Taste Buds (desires) – Psalm 34:8; Jeremiah 15:16; Psalm 1:2; Psalm 37:4
E. A New Heart – Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26; Jeremiah 24:7
F. New Feet – Before – Proverbs 1:16; Romans 3:15-16 After – Isaiah 52:7; Habakkuk 3:19; Ephesians 2:10
G. A New Face – 1 John 3:1-3; Colossians 3:9-14; Ephesians 4:22-24
2. Christ’s Word carries with it a DIVINE POWER – John 5:24-29; John 11:43-44; this Divine Power changes lives – Ephesians 2:1-10
