December 11, 2005 Sermon Outline
“Christ: Joy to the World!” Psalm 98

I. He deserves a New Song!
1. A New Song literally – Isaac Watts based his song “Joy to the World” on Psalm 98
2. A New Song spiritually – in the hearts and lives of those who by God’s Spirit and grace are born again, New Creatures – John 3:3: 3:5; 2 Corinthians 5:17; Ephesians 2:8-10
3. A New Song from us who are older or more mature spiritually – Deuteronomy 2:3; Revelation 2:1-7
4. Let every heart prepare Him room – Luke 2:7; Proverbs 4:23

II. Examine WHY He deserves a New Song!
1. He has done marvelous things – Psalm 98:1
2. His Right Hand and His Holy Arm have gained Him the Victory
A. His Right Hand and His Holy Arm is Christ – Isaiah 53:1
B. He has gained victory for us over sin and Satan – Exodus 17:8-16; Revelation 17:14
> 3. His SALVATION He has made known – Psalm 98:2; Romans 10:14-18; Matthew 28:19-20
4. His RIGHTEOUSNESS has been revealed – Psalm 98:2; Romans 3:19-21
5. He has remembered mercy and faithfulness – Psalm 98:3; Romans 1:16
6. These verses are REMEMBERED by Mary in Luke 1:46-55, Adam Clarke puts it well -
“ This psalm is an evident prophecy of Christ's coming to save the world; and what is here foretold by David is, in the Blessed Virgin's Song chanted forth as being accomplished. David is the Voice, and Mary is the Echo.
1. DAVID. "O sing unto the Lord a new song." (The Voice.) MARY. "My soul doth magnify the Lord." (The Echo.)
2. DAVID. "He hath done marvellous things." (The Voice.) MARY. "He that is mighty hath done great things." (The Echo.)
3. DAVID. "With his own right hand and holy arm hath he gotten himself the victory." (The Voice.) MARY. "He hath showed strength with his arm, and scattered the proud in the imagination of their hearts." (The Echo.)
4. DAVID. "The Lord hath made known his salvation; his righteousness hath he openly showed, "&c. (The Voice.) MARY. "His mercy is on them that fear him, from generation to generation." (The Echo.)
5. DAVID. "He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel." (The Voice.) MARY. "He hath helped his servant Israel, in remembrance of his mercy." (The Echo.)”

III. Consider the HOW of the NEW SONG –
1. Shout Joyfully - Psalm 98:4
2. Break forth - Psalm 98:4
3. With the harp (a gentle instrument) - Psalm 98:5
4. With the trumpet (a loud instrument) - Psalm 98 :6
5. With the sound of a Psalm – (a Holy Song) – Psalm 98:6
6. Shout Joyfully (AGAIN!) – Psalm 98:7
7. All these imply a certain energy / vitality in worship characteristic of those who REALLY CARE!

IV. Consider All Nature will praise Him –
1. The curse (Genesis 3:8-19; Romans 8:18-22) will be broken, nature will be redeemed!
2. Because of that even the inanimate creation should / will praise Him – Psalm 98:7-8
3. Because He will judge the earth – Psalm 98:9; Revelation 1:7

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven and nature sing,
And Heaven, and Heaven, and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains
Repeat the sounding joy, Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders and wonders of His love
