Sermon Outline
“Behold the Son of God!”
John 19:7-16
I. It is important we recognize and honor Jesus as the King of kings! John 19:1-6 (review)
1. Though the Roman soldiers called him “King of the Jews”, their mocking Him showed they despised Him as not a king at all, they did not recognize Him – John 19:1-3
2. His Kingdom (and He as King) was and is different than earthly kingdoms – Luke 22:24-29
3. His Kingdom is not seen, entered into or appreciated apart from are being born again – John 3:3; 3:5; 19:6
4. He was not the kind of King the Jews expected – 19:15
5. Yet it is a Kingdom indeed, even an eternal Kingdom – Revelation 17:14; Daniel 2:44
II. It is important to recognize and honor Jesus as the Son of God – John 19:7-8
1. In His trial, the mere mention of this fact to the Scribes and Chief Priests meant ‘Blasphemy’ ‘Case closed’ they obviously did not honor Him – Matthew 26:59-67
2. A mere fair trial (a right they bestowed on even the worst of criminals) would have brought great testimony on His behalf:
A. God the Father’s – Matthew 3:17; Matthew 17:15
B. His own – John 8:58; John 10:30; John 14:9; Matthew 26:63-64
C. The Holy Spirit’s John 15:26
D. The Angel Gabriel – Luke 1;26-35
E. Demons – Matthew 8:29; Mark 3:11
F. Matthew calls Him “Immanuel” God is with us – Matthew 1:23
G. Mark calls Him the Son of God – Mark 1:1
H. Luke records the statements of the Angel – Luke 1:32 & :35
I. John says the entire purpose of His book is that we might know Jesus is the Son of God – John 20:30-31; John 1:1-5
J. Martha – John 11:27; Peter – Matthew 16:15-17; The Centurion and others guarding Jesus’ cross – Matthew 27:54; Paul – Romans 9:5
3. His WORKS, His miracles testify that He is the Son of God – John 5:36; 10:25; 10:32; 10:37-38; 11:47; 15:24
4. It is the fact that He is God that makes Him different – Isaiah 55:8-9
III. Almost recognizing, almost honoring Him will not cut it – John 19:7-12
1. Pilate had a fear of Jesus, when he heard Christ made Himself the Son of God – John 19:7-8, Psalm 111:10
2. Due to His wife’s warning – Matthew 27:19
3. Because of this fear he questions Jesus –John 19:9-11
4. Jesus’ answer seems to set Pilate toward trying to free Him – John 19:12
5. Yet, the Jews seem to have a trump card in this situation … Pilate seems to have a greater fear of Caesar than of Christ – John 19:12-13
IV. The Jews wrong thinking about Jesus made them totally miss their true Lord! John 19:12-16
1. They were looking for a Messiah / a Savior – Daniel 2, 7, 9; Micah 5:2, etc…
2. They were hoping for someone who would crush the Romans, here Jesus seemed just the opposite – John 19:1-6
3. They did not consider Isaiah 53, they did see Him as a Savior from their sins – Matthew 1:21
4. Their yelling “Crucify Him, Crucify Him” showed not only their hatred of Christ but also their hatred of God – John 19:15; John 15:16-23
5. They prefer even their great enemy to Christ, showing the great sinfulness of their hatred – John 19:15
6. Going ahead to crucify Him they forget the Passover – John 19:14
7. We have similar things in America today:
A. In the great atheistic activity all around us
B. In so called churches that choose a false-christ who is not a savior from sin
God will judge us upon whether or not we recognize and honor Jesus as King of kings, Son of God and Savior – Psalm 2:12
